MSSQLServer doesn't appear in right pane of Configuration Manager

I installed SQL Server '12 and went to the Configuration Manager to start an instance, but MSSQLServer doesn't appear in the right pane when I click on SQL Server Services in the left pane. The right pane is blank.

I did a search on the forums and tried a couple of things - I put "." (no quotes) in Server Name in Server Management Studio when I first started it up and clicked Connect but it returns the error, "Cannot connect to.. Additional information: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 2) The system cannot find the file specified."

I don't see a default in Configuration Manager. What can I do to get MSSQLServer to appear in the Configuration Manager so I can start an instance of SQL Server?

Thanks,

Kristin
