What is the best way to get notified of an event?

I have a SProc that runs every day.  I do a simple calculation and I would expect the results to be 0 almost all the time, but once in a while the difference may not be zero.  How can I find out when the difference <> 0?  Is this a trigger?  Can I send myself an email?  I can post the SQL script if it helps.  However, I think the question is more about how to be notified of an event when the SProc produces a result <> 0.
