"Nightly index rebuild job" and "don't shrink trans log file" advice

Are the two compatible?

Our nightly re-index job can really inflate the log files sizes and one weekend we ran out of disk space on the server. This caused all other DBs on that server to fail because they too could not write to their log files. So we expanded the LUN, I backed up the offending log (30GB, thank you) and shrank the file on disk. I know that is frowned on but I don't think that constantly expanding the LUN is the right answer either. What are your thoughts?

TIA,
