In the early days of computers they talked a lot about "defragging" your (local) hard disk to reclaim blocks of contiguous storage. We sometimes have to shrink large ldf files on disk and I'm worried that that can lead to disk fragmentation. To further complicate matters, our trans log files are generally kept on our SAN. so I don't know if the disk defrag utilities accurately report the situation. When I mention defragmentation software to our Network Manager he generally frowns on the idea.
What's your take on this issue. Is it real? even on SANs? Can the tools believed?
TIA,
