Unable to connect to Access database or SQL Server database file

Starting from Tools/connect to database/Microsoft Access Database File and then pointing to a MDB file or an accdb file results in an error message "unrecognized database format".

Tools/connect to database/Microsoft SQL Server Database file and then pointing to an MDF file results in the message "The datasource value in the connection string specifies and instance of SQL Server that is not installed..."

I'm using Visual Studio Community 2015 and with "Sams Teach Yourself Visual Basic 2015 in 24 Hours", am attempting to learn Visual Basic! Hour 21 is "Working with a database" and instructs me to install SQL Server 2014, which I have done. It then goes through an introduction of ADO.NET and then starts leading me through an example, which breaks with the problems above. The book also provides solutions, so I have checked the solution provided for this example and it falls over with the same messages.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled both SQL Server 2014 and VS Community but haven't been able to get any further.

Any direction/suggestions would be most appreciated. Thank you.
