SQL Server Enterprise Edition overheads vs performance boosts

Hey People,

with more and more of the traditionally Enterprise Edition features turning up in the Standard Edition of SQL, I'm starting to question our need for Enterprise Edition.

Traditionally, it's been things like Partitioning (SQL DB and cubes), Indexed Views, Parallel Index operations and more CPUs, that have pushed us at EE, but most, if not all of these are now in SE (SQL 2017).

Am I better off still installing EE (licensing isn't an issue currently) as EE will always be the most performant edition?

Or will the overhead (if any) of using EE vs SE, negate any built-in performance boosts - unless I'm specifically taking advantage of EE only performance functionality?

Thoughts and comments welcome - hopefully backed up by facts!

Thanks
Craig
