As of 4 November, this last Wednesday, I could log into all instances of SQL 2012. Today I can't and have no idea what happened.
Here are the instances created in the past for SQL Server 2012 locally. There are 2 for DesignLaptop\SQLEXPRESS and one for (local)\SQLEXPRESS. These are all or have been 2012 instances. For some history, there was only one for Design Laptop.
I tried to get SQL 2014 to coexist with 2012 on my laptop, it didn't work out. This was done because I wanted to hook up to Azure which uses 2014.
When I uninstalled 2014 after an unsuccessful install attempt, 2012 crapped out.
I had to uninstall/reinstall 2012 and this is where the trouble seems to have started.
Now for the trouble -- I was able to connect to any 2012 local instance by selecting any of these just a few days ago. Now I can't and have no idea what's up. I tried logging into the one highlighted and can log in but could not access any objects or create queries.
I ran repair but got to a point where it could not find certain files. The path given to me at some point in the repair process flow was similar to this:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Setup Bootstrap\Update Cache\KB2958429\ServicePack\x64.
So looking at the path on my machine, I only found this part of it:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Setup Bootstrap\Update Cache
I googled the KB number and it was for Service Pack 2. So, I installed this. I could now log onto the highlighted instance and work remotely on the server shown below.
So, great news this surely means I can log into the local instances and access the databases locally again but no, I can't.
I'm sure it's the multiple instances causing something to blow up. But at least I can work on the server now which is more important but if I can't develop locally and keep losing my local instances this is a major issue.
Thanks for any help.
