When I try to install SQL Server 2012 Developer using Windows 10 Pro (Upgraded from Home), it will not allow me to configure by naming the host or instance using a "\" in the name. The error message says it does not allow special characters like "\" in the configuration. I have installed SQL Server 2012 on my Windows Vista OS computer with no naming problem or issues and it works fine. The reason I purchased a Win 10 OS computer is the next OS Microsoft will stop supporting is Windows Vista.
The reason I need a specific naming is I have a compiled program that I can no longer recompile to change the DB name. If the special character is works in Windows Vista set up using SQL Server 2012 Developer, why doesn't it work in Windows 10 which is supposed to be Microsoft's best OS ever? I can understand a naming and/or configuration compatibility issues if it was someone else's software, but since they are both Microsoft products why doesn't it work in both OS's?
If I choose the default configuration, it will create the DB but with the wrong name. I need the name BARRIE-PC\SQL. My computer name is BARRIE-PC. Should I rename my Computer "BARRIE-PC\SQL" to see if it will create a host name and a default instance with that name or will Win 10 Pro and SQL Server still have a naming and configuration conflict due to the "\" in the name.
Is this an oversite by Microsoft since some standard naming and file locations procedures due use the "\" and "/" O ram I installing it incorrectly on the 'configuration' Install
